Toad In The Hole

Toad In The Hole -
Toad In The Hole

What is toad in the hole? It is a traditional British dish of sausages baked in yorkshire batter. Usually it will also be served with onion gravy and vegetables.

Toad in the hole is incredibly easy to make, very filling and my family likes to eat it with either tomato sauce or onion gravy. If you’re looking for an easy budget meal, you can’t beat toad in the hole.

Prep: 10 minutes

Cook: 40 minutes

Serves: 4-6

Ingredients

  • 8 sausages
  • 200 g  SR flour
  • 1 1/3 cups milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbs oil

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 200C and grease a baking dish.
  2. Add the oil to the baking dish and bake for 5 minutes to heat the oil.
  3. Add the sausages to the baking dish and bake for 10-15 minutes until the sausages are browned.
  4. While the sausages are browning, add the remaining ingredients to a bowl and whisk until it forms a smooth batter.
  5. Once the sausages are browned, carefully pour the batter over the top of the sausages and then bake for 30 – 35 minutes until the batter has puffed and become golden.

Note: Traditionally this meal is made using plain flour. While doing the $200 food challenge we have not been able to buy any plain flour so SR flour is substituted instead.
