Do you only use buy those sachets of instant oats where all you need to do is add milk and then put it in the microwave? Those sachets are really expensive and you usually only get 12 sachets in a box and after a quick look online they around $4 a box for the cheap version. That’s over 33 cents per serve before you add your milk. That doesn’t seem like a lot of money, but what if I told you that you could be spending around 5 cents per serve instead of 33 cents?

It’s easy! Head in to Coles and buy a packet of their quick oats. Its $1.30 for a 900 gram packet and you’ll get 30 serves from that one packet. And it still only takes around 2 minutes in the microwave for the same end result.

Method

  • Add 1/3 cup of oats and 3/4 cup of milk or water to a microwave safe bowl.
  • Microwave on high for 90 seconds. Stir and return to microwave for a further 30-60 seconds.
  • Top with flavourings and stir again before serving.

My favourite way to eat porridge is to put a swirl of golden syrup on top. It looks pretty and tastes great.

A simple sprinkle of sugar over the top is also delicious
