Laundry Washing Powder
Next post
Washing powder can be a huge expense on the household budget. Especially if you have a large family. It needn’t be though, here is a simple recipe for home made washing powder that cleans just as well as any store bought washing powder.
This washing powder is so easy to make and only takes 10 minutes if you’re grating the soap by hand. You could speed this process up by using a food processor. I know it sounds off-putting using your food processor to make washing powder but when you think about it, its only soap.
This washing powder is versatile, you an use it for a front loader or a top loader. You can even use this powder as a pre-soaker.
To soak: If the wash is really dirty use 2 tablespoons of washing powder dissolved in warm water in your soaking bucket. If the clothes that need soaking are only lightly soiled then just use 1 tablespoon instead.
What you’ll need:
1/2 cup Washing Soda
1 cup finely grated soap
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup borax (optional*)
1/2 cup bicarb soda
In a large container combine the ingredients and mix well. This will need to be kept stored in an airtight container or jar.
To use:
1 tablespoon for a small load
2 tablespoons for a large or dirty load.
Note: All washing machines and cycles are that little bit different if you notice your clothes have some soap residue on them after washing then you may need to dissolve the powder in some hot water before adding to your washing machine.
*Borax is a bit controversial. It is included to act as a laundry booster. If you don’t want to use it then please leave it out.
